Tired of learning the quirks and difficulties of a different vehicle infotainment system every time you buy a new car, rent one, or ride with a friend? Do you wish you had an infotainment system in your car to begin with? Honda has teamed up with the smartphone app Drivemode to develop a new, and more importantly, driver friendly concept sure to intrigue drivers in and around Kansas City.
Drivemode is a free Android app meant to replace confusing and distracting in-car infotainment systems, with your phone acting as the hardware. After downloading the app, simply plug in your smartphone, and functions like entertainment and navigation will run through your smartphone rather than the relatively limited capabilities of pre-installed vehicle applications. Your smartphone device screen acts as the display, but Drivemode was designed with safety first and foremost in mind.
The app uses a single button interface featuring audio cues and is operated with swiping gestures and voice command, making eyes-free control not just easy but the preferred method. Plus, the “infotainment system” will be updated every time your phone is, unlike most systems currently installed in cars.
Honda has partnered with Drivemode to create a concept vehicle designed around a phone equipped with the app. The phone is cradled in its own head unit, replacing the center console digital display, and steering wheel controls usually used to control the radio control the app. The instrument panel, and rearview and blind spot cameras will also send their information to the phone screen.
Though Honda’s Drivemode concept model isn’t going into production anytime soon, the app promises the future of affordable and adaptable infotainment in cars.
